Rueibin Chen this past Friday night at Walt Disney Concert Hall performed spectacular renditions of some of the greatest classical songs of all time. The event, sponsored by the Cathay?Bank Foundation headquartered in El Monte, featured the works of Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Bach, Stravinsky (Three Movements from the Ballet Suite) and S. Prokofiev. A highly appreciative audience gave Chen multiple rounds of standing ovations and the reputable pianist treated the crowd to extra songs, despite being visibly fatigued. At one point the musician took a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe away sweat, cough and catch his breath. After the performance Chen graciously signed autographs and took photographs with his fans, who made no qualms about waiting in a long line for the chance to meet the performer.

After the great sucess Piano Recital at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles in 2006, the Chinese-Austrian Pianist Rueibin Chen is honoured to be invited by Cathay Bank Foundation and returning Walt Disney Concert Hall to have a Charity Piano Recital on August 5. Also another Charity Piano Recital will be hold the following day at Davies Symphony Hall on August 6 in San Francisco. All of the piano fans are welcomed to appreciate pianist Rueibin Chen's remarktable piano talent and at the same time share your love to those who need help.

Chen made his European debut in the Grossensaal of the Konzerthaus in Vienna in 1984 to much acclaim. He has been invited to perform at many festivals, such as the International Salzburg Music Festival, Vienna Spring Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Hong Kong Festival, Taipei Music Festival, Taipei Arts Festival, the International Rachmaninoff Music Festival in Moscow, the Janáček Music Festival in Czechoslovakia, the Chopin Festivals in Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland, various festivals in Romania and the Auckland International Piano Festival.

Chen tours regularly throughout the world, performing in major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington DC, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Kodak Theater in Hollywood, Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Opera de Monte Carlo, Warsaw Philharmonie, Bolshoi Hall in Moscow, F. Mann Auditorium Tel Aviv, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Symphony Hall in Osaka, Hong Kong Cultural Center, Beijing Music Hall, National Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Center in Taipei and Sydney Opera House. Since 2002, he has been the Artist-in-Residence of Hong Kong Radio Television.

Chen is also an active chamber musician and has performed with international chamber groups including the London Chamber Players, Lark Quartet and Shanghai Quartet.

He has given master classes in musical strongholds such as the New England Conservatory in Boston, and the Masterplayer International Music Academy in Lugano. He has also served as a jury member in international piano competitions in Switzerland.

In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth in 2010, Chen has launched a project to present a series of concerts featuring Chopin's masterpieces, including solo and piano concerto works, in major cities in America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region from 2008 through 2010. Chen is the first Taiwan-born pianist, played the famous "Yellow River Concerto" in Hong Kong and China successfully and also invited by the Chinese government to perform with orchestras at the opening of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

Music Introduction:
Johannes Brahms completed his Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor in 1861. Though this work received mixed reviews by friends and critics alike, it has remained alive in the concert world. Throughout the twentieth century, its popularity continued to grow as the listening public came to recognize Brahms as perhaps the quintessential master of Romantic chamber music. His first quartet for piano, violin, viola, and cello harkens back to the music of Schubert, one of Brahms' favorite composers, as well as forward with inventiveness that inspired composers in the next century, especially Schoenberg. While his contemporaries were writing music that was an obvious break with the past, particularly Wagner, Brahms wrote in the old forms, which hung together with a pleasing and deceptive looseness, as did the works of Schubert. Scratching the surface of Brahms' first piano quartet reveals that the themes and textures do not hang together loosely at all. Everything is built out of thematic material, which is without precedent in chamber music. It is the kernel of what Schoenberg described as "developing variation" and prepares the way for atonality, which coheres only when all the material is in reference to itself. The G minor quartet is pure clarity in a way that did not exist before Brahms. This quartet was also the first chamber work of Brahms' that he played in public. The first movement of the G minor quartet has the sweetness of heroic themes in repose, but it also simmers, at least in a good performance. In bad renditions of this work, the tension is ignored in favor of an empty niceness, which is certainly to be avoided. The second movement, an Intermezzo, is introspective and full of musical inquiry among the strings. Themes spread out searching for something, with a beautiful and mysterious effect. The Andante third movement has a dreamy grandness, which is normally an effect reserved for orchestral forces. The Hungarian, Rondo finale is pure fire, blasting through rousing themes with a concerted vigor. Many generations after the work's inception, it has withstood the public's initial reservations. It should also be pointed out that other influential musicians thought it was pure genius. One great violinist regarded it as proof that Brahms was Beethoven's musical heir. There were many such reactions. Schoenberg liked it enough to orchestrate it. He gave his reasons for doing so as follows: "1. I like the piece. 2. It is seldom played. 3. It is always played very badly; the better the pianist, the louder he plays and you hear nothing from the strings. I wanted to hear everything...." ~All Music Guide~

Dvorák's Piano Quartet in E flat major, Op. 87, had its premiere in November of 1890, just before the creative beginnings of the great "Dumky" trio, Op. 90. The quartet, however, while not devoid of folk influences, falls on the pan-European side of the duality that pervaded and animated Dvorák's work. Its outer movements are expansive, quite Brahmsian essays in sonata form, with characteristic touches in the instrumental writing such as the rapid exchange of tremolos between violin and viola at the end of the first movement. The second movement, marked Lento, is one of Dvorák's most purely lyrical, with a sequence of five themes, shifting in mood. The third movement, the most folkloristic of the four, consists of two contrasting dances; its central section deploys the piano in such a way that it sounds, perhaps, like a hammer dulcimer or other Eastern European folk instrument. The work is an unjustly neglected masterpiece of the chamber music repertoire, an unfailing crowd-pleaser but possessed of an originality that makes it worthy to stand beside the more complex corners of Brahms' chamber output. ~All Music Guide~

Having left his Tainan hometown to study music in Vienna at the tender age of 13, pianist Chen Ruei-bin has carved out a career as a much sought-after soloist. He performs in Taichung on April 6

Taiwan-born pianist Chen Ruei-bin (陳瑞斌) has spent most of his life abroad, having left his hometown in Tainan at age 13 to train in Vienna. He now divides his time between Europe and the US, performing a grueling schedule of concerts. He trained under the Russian master Lazar Berman, and is known for his energetic, sometimes athletic performance style, as well as for his interpretation of modern Russian composers such as Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff. Earlier this month he performed in Taipei and Kaohsiung, and on April 6 he will perform in Taichung.

In addition to receiving numerous international accolades, Chen won the Taiwan Millennium Best Artistic Performance Award (台灣最佳表演藝術獎) in 2000 and in 2004 he took home Golden Melody Awards (台灣金曲獎) for best classical album and best performance. At his Concert of Russian Ballet Music (陳瑞斌俄羅斯芭蕾鋼琴音樂會) at the National Concert Hall, Taipei City last week, Chen was given an enthusiastic response despite the unconventional nature of the program, which opened with two movements from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Ballet Suite, Op. 75, and finished with three movements from Stravinsky’s Petrushka.

In an interview with the Taipei Times last week, Chen said he particularly enjoyed playing technically demanding music such as Petrushka, which is not well-known in Taiwan, because it was a chance to “show how good I am.” Chen is determined to prove himself in the eyes of his peers, and his efforts have achieved considerable success. He is now a much sought-after soloist. But Chen’s career as a concert pianist was far from a foregone conclusion. He described his childhood in rural Tainan, where at the time few people would have been familiar with a concert piano. “Unlike many younger Asian musicians, I was never given a structured musical education,” he said. “It just happened that my father taught music at a local primary school and we had a piano in the house. It was a secondhand Japanese-made piano and must be nearly 100 years old by now.” He went on to describe how his father would search out old vinyl recordings of classical music to listen to. “Often the crackling of the needle was even louder than the music,” he said. Chen’s uncle, a musician in Taipei, would occasionally visit and give his nephew a piano lesson, but that was the extent of Chen’s formal musical education. Despite this rather haphazard foundation, Chen won himself the opportunity to study at the Vienna Conservatory after being selected in a government national talent search program.

“The first time I ever got on an aircraft was to fly to Vienna,” he said with a chuckle. Prior to arriving in Vienna, Chen said he was not at all sure he would pursue a career in music. “My parents didn’t really know what to do [about this opportunity to study abroad], so they thought I might as well go and see what would come of it. If I could come back with some kind of diploma, that would have been sufficient.”

His love of music began in the concert halls and opera houses of Vienna. “I didn’t speak any German when I arrived,” Chen said, “so there wasn’t much for me to do other than go listen to music. That is when I came to love music and decided to continue on this path.” To subsidize his stay in Europe, Chen said he began registering for all the piano competitions he could. “I was pretty lucky that I managed to pick up quite a few prizes, and in this way, my musical career also developed.”

Chen made his European concert debut at the Grossensaal of the Vienna Konzerthaus in 1984 to considerable acclaim and his career as a concert pianist has never looked back. He has performed in many of the great concert halls of the world and worked with some of its most notable orchestras. Although he returns to Taiwan regularly, he says he feels as much European as Taiwanese. “After all, I have spent longer abroad than I have in Taiwan,” he said. Chen said that having been thrown into a foreign environment at such a young age, he needed to educate himself in a way that many other young Asian pianists do not. “At the time, few aspiring Asian musicians would have gone overseas so young [Chen was just 13], or at least they would have traveled in the company of their parents. I was on my own and had to deal with everything myself. My career is a totally different world for my parents, one that they have little understanding of."

Chen’s performance style has been deeply influenced by his last mentor, the Russian virtuoso Berman.

The pianist said that he was the only Asian student ever taken on by Berman and talked about his work developing a feel for the Russian composers. “In playing a piece like Petrushka, the technical challenges are considerable. You need a total command of the skills, before you can start giving it the true Russian feeling … The physical demands are huge.” At the Taipei concert, Chen attacked and caressed the piano by turn, giving substance to a much quoted Boston Globe review describing his performance style as one of “white-hot energy, steel-fingered power and athletic virtuosity.”

"But if the pianist plays really well, listeners will find greater enjoyment in the piano recital than in a 90-member orchestra performance.”In the three recitals that will be held in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung March 20, March 25 and Apr. 6, respectively, Chen will perform piano transcriptions of Russian ballet music such as Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet Ballet Suite, Op. 75.The program will also include Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker from the Ballet Suite Op.71a, Stravinsky's Three Movements from Petrushka Ballet Suite, Rachmaninoff's 18th Variation from Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and Chopin's Nocturne in C minor, Op.48 No. 1 and Barcarolle in F Sharp Major, Op.60.Chen told reporters he had been a big fan of Russian ballet since his teenage years, and later when he began to practice ballet score transcriptions for piano solos, he realized how talented the Russian composers really were.When he was much younger, he said, his playing of Russian music was focused more on technique, how fast his fingers could move on the piano. But as he matured, he began exploring ways of interpreting the distinctive characteristics of the Russian people and their music, he said."Russian music is about sharp contrasts and intense emotions," he said. Internationally acclaimed Austria-based pianist Rueibin Chen is scheduled to hold his recitals in Taiwan from March to April. These concerts feature the world’s best-known Russian ballet suites. Playing famous orchestral scores on the piano was very challenging, Chen said, adding that but if a pianist plays really well, audiences will find greater pleasure in the pianist’s recital than in a 90-member orchestra performance. The first-half program of Chen’s concerts will open with Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Ballet Suite, Op. 75, followed by Russian pianist Sergei Rachmaninoff’s 18th Variation from Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and Russian composer Peter Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker from the Ballet Suite Op.71a. The second half includes Polish composer Frederic Chopin’s Nocturne in C minor Op.48 No. 1 and Barcarolle in F-sharp major Op.60, and ends with Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s Three Movements from Petrushka Ballet Suite. A big fan of Russian classical ballet, Chen played Petrushka on the piano at the age of 17. When he was younger, he said, his performance of Russian music was focused more on technical skills and how fast his fingers could move on the piano. But as he matured, he began to play with a touch of Russia – he called it Russian spirituality. These pieces, Chen said, are also famous soundtracks to the films “The Pianist,” “Somewhere In Time” and “Fantasia,” as well as a Japanese television serial “Nodame Cantabile.” Chen, born in Tainan in 1967, learned to play the piano at the age of five under his father’s teaching. Eight years later, he went to Vienna, Austria, and obtained Austrian citizenship in 1999. The Tainan-born pianist, the only Asian disciple of the late Russian pianist Lazar Berman, has lived overseas for many years. He graduated from the Vienna Academy of Music City and the German National Institute of Music in Hannover in the eighties. After winning in the International Piano Competition of Rachmaninoff in 1984, the soloist began shining at many international piano competitions held in Warsaw, Tel Aviv, Salt Lake City, Athens, Vienna, Spain and Italy. Working with the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra at Shanghai Oriental Art Center, Chen was the first Taiwanese musician to perform the famous piece “Yellow River Piano Concerto” during the opening season of the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, China. To mark the bicentennial birth date of Franz Liszt, the virtuoso Hungarian virtuoso pianist, Chen will perform some pieces of that composer’s works as his Taiwanese recitals’ encores. The music inspired by two rivers on either side of the Taiwan Strait should be performed back to back at one concert to highlight the similarities and unique differences in sentiment and influences, according to a renowned Taiwanese musician.

Concert pianist Rueibin Chen, who has played both the Yellow River and Love River concertos for international audiences, said the two pieces resonate deeply with him.

The Yellow River Piano Concerto is always a big challenge because of the emotional associations it elicits, he said in a recent interview with the Central News Agency."I must control the overwhelming emotions evoked by the epic music, which, in my mind, becomes scenes that reflect the legacies of contemporary Chinese history," he said.

Three of Chen's most recent concerts featured the Yellow River Concerto, which is the best-known Chinese composition in the world. He performed as the piano soloist in a 200-member orchestra of mostly Chinese instruments in Hong Kong early this year, and later was accompanied by a symphony orchestra at a concert in the northern Chinese city of Tientsin. His most recent performance was in Shanghai in May."

I first learned about the Yellow River concerto when I was a music student in Vienna in the early 1980s," he said.A Chinese musician told Chen the story of the concerto, which is based on the Yellow River Cantata that was composed by Xian Xinghai of China during World War II (1937-1945) when Sino-Japanese conflict was at a peak."I was deeply moved by the story of the struggle of the nation and the people, and have since tried to comprehend the nuances which reflect a very Chinese sentiment."Although he moved from Taiwan to Vienna at the age of 12, Chen said, he is still very Chinese."

Also, probably because I have traveled to China many times since the 1980s on concert tours, I feel very connected to the music, " he said.Chen's first visit to China was more than 10 years ago, long after the Cultural Revolution that inspired some of the music that was later added to the concerto."

Over the past years, I've seen changes in the land and among the people, and the music of Yellow River always conjures up many images of the past, " he said. "Like a river of history, it reveals so much about the misery, frustration and perseverance of the people and the land.

"The fourth movement of the concerto, which has been described by critics as too politically loaded and militaristic, has been edited many times and the various editions have been given different interpretations by pianists and orchestras.

But Chen said that for him the most moving version of the piece is the original Yellow River Cantata composed by Xian Xinghai.However, at his recent concerts in Hong Kong, Tientsin and Shanghai, Chen performed a version that was edited in the 1960s and in which the melody of The East Is Red -- the de facto anthem of the People's Republic of China during the Cultural Revolution -- recurs consistently.

"The Yellow River Piano Concerto arranged by Yin Chengxong and Chu Wanghua in 1969 has become popular again in China after being banned on concert stages when the Cultural Revolution ended, " he said.The East Is Red music in the fourth movement is no longer considered taboo because it is now associated more with China's rising power in the 21st century than with the haunting memories of the Cultural Revolution, Chen said."Some renowned Chinese and Western pianists have picked up the piece and made it the best known Chinese piano concerto in the world," he said.

Not that there are many piano concertos by ethnic Chinese composers, he noted. One of the few is the Love River Piano Concerto, composed by Taiwanese Lu Liang-hui in 2006."The mood of the Love River Piano Concerto is comparable to the Yellow River Piano Concerto because they both combine Western music methodology with elements of Chinese music," he said.

The Love River Piano Concerto uses piano and Chinese musical instruments to portray the seasonal scenery along the Love River in southern Taiwan.Chen and the Kaohsiung City Chinese Orchestra have given a series of highly acclaimed performances of the piece in Taiwan, the United States, Australia and New Zealand."

I can detect the influence of Russian Romanticism in both concertos -- Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov in particular, " Chen said. "Actually, I was amazed when a music critic in Tientsin told me that he was sure my interpretation of the Yellow River music was inspired by Russian Romanticism."He admitted that despite his training in Austria and Germany and his admiration for Beethoven, he always falls for the passion of Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Liszt and Rachmaninov.

The pianist said that he would like to perform the two "river" concertos, which are each approximately 20 minutes long, at one concert.The Yellow River Piano Concerto has never been performed in Taiwan, and people on mainland China probably do not know about the Love River composition, he said.

"I always believe that music is the best medium through which to forge affinity," Chen said. "In the Yellow River and Love River pieces, you can find similarities, and at the same time, appreciate the uniqueness of each."

Tainan, July 27 (CNA) Several heavyweight musicians from Europe will perform and give master classes at the First Chamber Music Festival hosted by Greater Tainan City on Dec. 6-11, a cultural ambassador of Tainan County told the Central News Agency on Tuesday.

Pianist Rueibin Chen said he and the county government's Department of Cultural Affairs have planned the music event to celebrate the merger and elevation of status of the Greater Tainan region.The music festival -- the first of its kind in southern Taiwan -- will be held immediately after the Dec. 4 election for mayors of the island's five major cities.

Chen, a Taiwanese-Austrian musician, was brought up in Tainan as a child before he moved to Austria 30 years ago. He told CNA he was excited to be able to invite renowned musicians, including violinist and conductor Manuel Briega from Spain, German cellist and conductor Peter Bruns, French violist Pierre Lenert and British violinist Justine Chen, to bring a musical sensation to southern Taiwan.

During the six-day festival, chamber music groups from Europe and Asia will present a series of concerts at the Tainan County Music Hall.The sponsor will also select three chamber music groups, each with two to four young musicians aged between 16 and 28, to take the stage with the masters from Europe.

"It is a marvelous opportunity for local chamber music groups aspiring to have international encounters," Chen said.Music groups interested in the contest should contact the Department of Cultural Affairs before Aug. 6, he added.

Taipei, June 1 (CNA) World renowned Taiwanese pianist Chen Ruei-bin gave a mini-concert at a press conference Tuesday as a preview to a June 6 solo concert in Taipei to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Polish composer and pianist Frederic Chopin's birth.

The pianist, who comes from southern Taiwan and honed his musical skills in Austria and Germany, told CNA he is excited to play in front of local music lovers for the first time in three years in Taiwan's first full Chopin concert held at the National Concert Hall.

Chen, who was taught piano by his father from the age of 5 and went to Vienna, Austria aged 12 on a state-funded scholarship, has won 18 medals in various international competitions. He has spent most of his career overseas and most of his time traveling and performing.

The virtuoso launched a Chopin 200 commemoration tour in 2008 that has taken him from the United States to Australia and New Zealand and from Europe to China and Hong Kong during the last three years.

Chen said he has played Chopin since he was a teenager, when his interpretations of Chopin received high acclaim from Austrian media and music critics.

"Looking back, my performance at the time would not even interest me now because it was not that good. As I'm now older and have experienced setbacks, challenges and heartache, I think I am able to interprete Chopin's works better, " he said. (By Chris Wang) ENDITEM/J

This year is the 200th anniversary of Chopin's birthday commenmoration. Around the world, there are actively preparing for a variety of music concerts to commemorate Chopin, the piano poet. Taiwan is no exception. Master Pianist Rueibin Chen, born in Taiwan, has lived overseas for many years. Master Pianist Rueibin Chen's performance with National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra on 21 November, 2009 and 22 November, 2009, in Taichung county and Chiayi county seperately, was a great sucess. The audience those who attended the concert had a wonderful time and appreciated Rueibin Chen's music indeed. Mr. Rueibin Chen's distinguished career as an internationally acclaimed pianist has earned him a reputation for technical brilliance, immense energy, and intense artistic expression. His masterful performance of Rachmaninoff's complete piano concertos (including the Paganini Rhapsody Op. 43) in two consecutive nights at Taiwan’s National Concert Hall garnered significant critical acclaim. The performance was considered to "be the first of its kind and has left a sensational imprint in the minds of the overflowed audience." Such praise befits "one of those geniuses that come along once in twenty years." (Neue Zürcher Zeitung)

A Chinese-Austrian born in Taiwan, Chen has won a total of eighteen medals, five of them gold, in various international piano competitions in Warsaw (Chopin) , Tel Aviv (Rubinstein), Salt Lake City (Bachauer), Athens (Callas), Vienna, Manresa, and Italy (Rome, Rachmaninov, Bellini, and Stresa).

Chen received his first piano lessons from his father when he was five. At the age of thirteen, he was selected by the Taiwanese government in a national talent search and was sent to Vienna, Austria, where he obtained a concert diploma from the Vienna Conservatory. Subsequently, he received a soloist's examination award from the Hannover Hochschule für Musik in Germany and then continued his study under the legendary Lazar Berman.

Career

Chen started his career as a concert pianist at age ten when he made his debut with Taipei Symphony Orchestra. He was named the Principal Soloist of "Moldova" Iasi and Tirgu Mures Philharmonic Orchestra in Romania. He has appeared as a soloist with many orchestras around the world, including the Utah Symphony, Budapest Symphony, Prague Symphony, Czech State Philharmonic of Brno, Moscow State Symphony, Russian State Symphony, Singapore Symphony, New Philharmonia Japan, Shanghai Symphony, National Symphony Taiwan, Taipei Symphony, and Hong Kong Sinfonietta, among others. He was invited to be the Soloist with Taipei Symphony on its Asian Tour, the designated soloist of the 75th Anniversary of Turkey, the soloist with Kaohsiung City Traditional Orchestra of Taiwan on its America Tour in 2005 and on its Australia Tour in 2006, the soloist with Evergreen Symphony on its China Tour in 2005. Chen has worked with such conductors as Antoni Wit, Pavel Kogan, Sergiu Comissiona, Joseph Silverstein, and András Ligeti.

Chen made his European debut in the Grossensaal of the Konzerthaus in Vienna in 1984 to much acclaim. He has been invited to perform at many festivals, such as the International Salzburg Music Festival, Vienna Spring Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Hong Kong Festival, Taipei Music Festival, Taipei Arts Festival, the International Rachmaninoff Music Festival in Moscow, the Janáček Music Festival in Czechoslovakia, the Chopin Festivals in Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland, various festivals in Romania and the Auckland International Piano Festival.

Chen tours regularly throughout the world, performing in major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington DC, the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Kodak Theater in Hollywood, Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, Gewandhaus Leipzig, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Opera de Monte Carlo, Warsaw Philharmonie, Bolshoi Hall in Moscow, F. Mann Auditorium Tel Aviv, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Symphony Hall in Osaka, Hong Kong Cultural Center, Beijing Music Hall, National Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Center in Taipei and Sydney Opera House. Since 2002, he has been the Artist-in-Residence of Hong Kong Radio Television.

Chen is also an active chamber musician and has performed with international chamber groups including the London Chamber Players, Lark Quartet and Shanghai Quartet.

He has given master classes in musical strongholds such as the New England Conservatory in Boston, and the Masterplayer International Music Academy in Lugano. He has also served as a jury member in international piano competitions in Switzerland.

In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Chopin’s birth in 2010, Chen has launched a project to present a series of concerts featuring Chopin's masterpieces, including solo and piano concerto works, in major cities in America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region from 2008 through 2010. Chen is the first Taiwan-born pianist, played the famous "Yellow River Concerto" in Hong Kong and China successfully and also invited by the Chinese government to perform with orchestras at the opening of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Recently, he and the former vice president of Taiwan launch an international music alliance in order to promote the internationalization of Taiwan's music and call for music ethusiasts in Taiwan and abroad to join together.

Recordings

Chen has produced a dozen CD recordings with labels such as UNIVERSAL, NAXOS/MARCO POLO INTERNATIONAL, KKM AUSTRIA and JINGO RECORDS with works by Chopin, Liszt, Wagner-Liszt, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Piazolla and his own transcriptions. His concerts have been broadcast in many radio and television programs in Europe, Asia, America, and Australia.

Prizes and Recognition

The recipient of many prizes, Chen was awarded the "Bösendorfer" prize in Vienna and was chosen by the Minister of Culture in Taiwan as the "Best Young Artist". Chen won the "Best Prize for Contributions to Music" at Salzburg International Music Festival and the "Albert Roussel Prize" in Paris . He was invited by the President of Taiwan, Teng-Hui Lee to his Festival Concert at the Presidential Palace in 1992, which was broadcast by national radio and television networks. He was awarded the "Taiwan Millennium Best Artistic Performance Award" in 2000, the "Golden Melody Awards" for "Best Performance" and for "Best Album", and the "Character of Highest Potential" in Taiwan. Chen was also honored by the County Supervisor of Greater Los Angeles County for promoting diplomacy between the United States and Taiwan through music with his solo recital at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Chen's musicianship has been highly praised by many renowned musicians and critics. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau was very impressed with his astonishing technique. Spanish pianist Alicia de Larrocha described his playing as "magnificent" and "full of promise." After his performance of Rachmaninoff's second Piano Sonata in a piano competition, he received tremendous accolades from former New York Times critic Harold C. Schonberg, who wrote that Chen's interpretation was the best he had heard by a young artist for a long time. His playing has a surreal quality evoked by a seemingly effortless execution. There is no hint of artificiality, no hint of anything overlooked in his preparation, just a sense that here is a true virtuoso. He has the ability to become one with the essence and intent of the original composition.

Chen was a pupil of the legendary Lazar Berman of Russia who died early last year. Berman was known for his thunderous technique and thrilling interpretation of Liszt and Rachmaninoff. Considering that Chen exhibits the same powerful but controlled qualities--the string of brilliance continues unabated.

In addition, Chen is also known for his lucidity, i.e., his unique ability to make each note lucid and pure.

Chen recently conducted Master Classes in the Los Angeles and San Diego areas to share his knowledge with local students that included pianists at the top of their field.

Mr. Chen answered a series of questions posed by The Epoch Times:

ET: You were able to help the students during your Master Classes, even though many were already advanced in their piano playing skills. Could you please describe your experiences in helping the students?

RC: There is a difference of method that I use in teaching students of different levels. During the Master Classes that I teach, with advanced students for example, I would use different metaphors--I need to work harder on inspiring their imagination; they need to imagine the scenario of the works, to feel its tone, its color. Composers of advanced works ask for deeper understanding of their music, of the nuances and sophistication that simpler pieces do not request.

Metaphors and analogies are not necessary for lower-level students. Also, in terms of techniques, students of advanced levels need more refined instructions that target their specific needs.

ET: Will you be giving more Master Classes in the near future?

RC: Yes on July 2, at 3 pm, at the Chinese Cultural Center in El Monte.

ET: What Master pianists did you learn from and who inspired you to play better?

RC: One of the three teachers I learned longest from was Lazar Berman, the legendary Russian pianist. I was his only Asian student. I almost became a student with another legendary Russian pianist, Sviatoslav Richter. He was kind of too old when I met him and was not able to teach very much.

I feel that what I learned from those great teachers were not piano playing per se, but what is beyond piano. Their life stories are my source of inspirations. Both Richter and Berman endured great pain and hardship in their lives, yet their passion for music persisted and helped them through. That was what made their music special, and touching, at least to me. Some audiences have no clue why their music was so special. That was why.

Lazar Berman was forbidden from playing outside of the then Communist Russia. It was only when he reached his fifties that he was able to get on stage in the United States. It was not fame or money that they were after; but art, and only art. Without such motivation, the art is not pure and the artist is not pure, either. An artist who pursues things other than art is nothing but a label, a hypocrite.

But I know that to be like those great pianists, under the current circumstance, is becoming more and more impossible, with the commercialization and everything. Sometimes I have to capitulate to the commercial pressure and I do hope that I could be pure at other times. Otherwise I would be valueless, with no hope of surpassing those deceased, great masters.
I have to admit that there is no living artist today that I can admire, because they fall short of the high standards left by the forefathers.

Historically speaking, time will be the test to what can stay permanent. Artists of modern times are too busy and always in the predicament of the ideal and the reality; which may not be known by the average audience who love to follow the current trend.

ET: Is there one particular piece that resonates with you; a piece that you feel at one with?
RC: One piece I would like to point out, which is also a piece that I will play for the July concert [Disney Concert Hall and San Diego], is Beethoven's Appasionata.

"Impressive" and "striking" is the word that audiences use in describing their feelings as they listen to this piece. One musician told me that my rendering is the fastest of all the recordings he had ever heard.

As I play, I am not playing the notes, or the keys. Beethoven composed this piece after reading Shakespeare's Tempest. I tried to place myself in the scene of the tempest, imagining myself actually in it, to a degree that the piano keys have disappeared.

Even when I use a lot of pedals, each note I play is lucid, its grain clear and lucid, even to the audience in the far back of the concert hall. Lucidity is what people regard as my uniqueness. One musician friend of mine recalled that once I told my students that they should let audience in the most remote corner hear every note clearly, even the most soft ones.

I don't think I am able to do that purely by techniques---techniques are not sufficient. The power is from an internal mental source. Whether it is the loudest notes or the softest, it should be clear, even to the audience sitting in the far back.

The power of penetration is from the inside.

Intenationally renowned Chinese-Austian master pianist Rueibin Chen will showcase his remarkable talent in Australia during the New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) Gala 2006. Chen has played in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the world: the Musikverein and konzerthaus in Vienna, the Opera de Monte Carlo, the Bolshoi Hall Moscow and his celebated home stage of National Chiang Kai-Shek Cultural Centre.

At the age of 10, Taiwanese-bon Chen became a symphony soloist as a concet pianist with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra in 1978.

Three years later his talent took him to Vienna, where he received a concert diploma and soloist's examination award in Hannover, Germany. He studied under Lazar Berman and Murray Perahis's master class. In 1994 he was appointed principal soloist of the "Moldova" Iasi and Tirgu Mures Philharmonic Orchestra in Romania.

Chen has won numerous prestigious awards, including international piano competitions in Vienna, Rome, Warsaw, Athens and Twl Aviv. He has performed at international festivals aound the wold with the finest of ochesta such as the Ukrainian State Symphony, the New Philharmonia Japan, Shanghai Symphony and London chambe Players. Chen is also well-respected fo his perfomance of chamber music and has perfomed with the Shanghai Quartet and lark Quartet.

In 1999 Chen became an Austian citizen, but continued to uphold artistic acclaim in his homeland. The previous year Taiwan's Ministy of Culture awaded Chen "Best Young Artist" which was followed with a mak of national reverence three years later when the then-president Lee Teng-hui invited Chen to perform at the Presidential Palace in a concert that was broadcast across Taiwan. In 2000 Chen was honoured with Taiwan's "Best Arts Performance" award.

Chen has lived in Hong Kong since 2002 as the Artist in Residence of Radio-Television Hong Kong. He is sponsored by various institutions such as the International Chopin Society.

Music has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember. A successful pianist now Rueibin Chen tells of how talent was not the only thing involved in his stuggle to become what he is today.

"My father was a piano teacher at a primary school in Taiwan, and as a result, he started teaching me the piano when I was five," said Ruei, who was here recently fo a piano recital.

"Once I picked up the basics, I enjoyed playing the piano so much that I learnt it much faster than everyone else."

"However, I didn't really take it seriously until my father thought it would be a good idea fo me to compete with a few hundred other children to study music overseas," he recalled.

Ruei was 13 when he managed to obtain a place in a prestigious school in Vienna, Austria. Unoftunately it didn't come with a scholarship.

Overseas education is a very serious matter in Taiwan as anyone who wishes to go for it has to obtain a permit of approval form the government, said Ruei.

"This prompts annual " competitions" among many school children for places in overseas schools.

"Although everyone was happy for me when I won the competition, it was difficult fo my parents to support my overseas education since my father was only a school teacher," said Ruei.

Financial difficulty did not stop Ruei and his father sought help from the private sector.

Leaving fo Vienna with an uncle who could speak Geman, Ruei again competed with hundreds of other children- this time for the sole scholarship for the best student.

Being in a foreign country and unable to understand the language would probably have been daunting fo any other 13-yea-old.

Ruei, however, gave his best perfomance and won the scholarship.

"The scholarship was only a temporary one though, but it was still bette than nothing," said Ruei.

The temporary scholarship wasn't the last barrier that Ruei had to face.

"Competing for the scholarship might have been tough, but studying there was much harder."

"It wasn't the practical classes though, since music is an international language. I faced difficulty when the theory classes came since Geman is not an internatinoal language," he explained jokingly.

"Thankfully, I had an uncle who could speak German. It was quite difficult learning both the language and music at the same time," said ruei.

"Also, because of my inability to speak Geman then, friends were hard to come by," which was a cause of some distress fo Ruei.

His uncle stayed a year with him and then he had to retun to Taiwan. Ruei had to learn to be independent after this.

He only retuned to spend the new year with his family.

However, Ruei's pursuit of his musical career prevented hime from going back on his third year as he went on several international piano competitions.This continued for the next six years.

His performances in the international arena gave him much exposure and the experience futher enhanced his ability to play wondeful renditions of classical masterpieces, sometimes receiving accolades form his peers.

Knowing what he wanted and having the will to carry out his dreams gave him the edge he needed, said Ruei.

He has also managed to earn a living from his concert performances.

Taking a break from his own life story, Ruei took the opportunity to talk about his family.

"The dream did not stop with me as my brother and sister ae also musicians," Ruei said proudly of his brother, who is known as the best cello teacher in Taiwan and his sister, who has just finished her studies and won the first prize in a piano competion in the United States.

"I also return to Taiwan annually for concerts, which my mother and father never fail to support," he added.

Giving an insight into his own success Ruei advises would be pianists "feel and understand the pieces you play. Only then can you allow you own emotions to guide you through the peice as if it is a part of you."

Acclaimed pianist Rueibin Chen returns home for a series of three concerts.PHOTO COURTESY OF MUSICPOWERNot many 10-year-olds tickle the ivories as symphony soloists, so after Tainan-born Rueibin Chen (陳瑞斌) did so in 1978 with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, big things were expected of him.

At 13, Chen moved to Vienna, obtaining a concert diploma and a subsequent soloist's examination award in Hanover, Germany, before going on to take master classes under Murray Perahia. He has since collected a mantle of highly prized awards, including Vienna's Boesendorfer Prize in 1983, Paris' Albert Roussel Prize in 1991 and Taiwan's own "best arts performance" prize in 2000.

That was the last time Chen played in Taiwan and he's making a welcome return in a series of three concerts starting in Taipei tomorrow, Nov. 9, then moving to Taichung on Friday, Nov. 11 and returning home to Tainan on Friday, Nov. 15.

"The pressure playing in Tainan is intense compared with Taipei," Chen said in a telephone interview at the end of a full day of rehearsing. "The audiences there are more conservative, more accustomed to traditional Taiwanese entertainment than they are to classical music.
"Besides, my parents are there," he added laughing. "That makes it really intense."

To hear Chen admit stage freight seems unusual for a musician of his caliber. Since his European debut in 1984 at the Vienna Koncerthaus, he has performed non-stop at one festival after another: the International Salzburg Music Festival, the Vienna Spring Festival, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Hong Kong Festival, the International Rachmaninoff Music Festival in Moscow and the Taipei Music Festival, where he performed for the first time Rachmaninoff's complete concertos.

In 1989 he was selected "best young artist" by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture. Three years later, he was asked by then president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) to play at the Presidential Palace in a festival concert that was broadcast across the nation. He's won international piano competitions in Warsaw, Tel Aviv, Athens, Vienna, Rome and even played for former Israeli president Itzhak Rabin.

"2000 was the last time I played as a soloist in Taiwan," Chen said.
"Before then, I had the honor of accompanying the Taipei Symphony Orchestra as piano soloist on their 1998 tour of Asia."

Chamber music is another area in which Chen excels. He has performed with well-known groups like the Shanghai Quartet and Lark Quartet. So can Taiwan audiences expect a song or two at any of his concerts? "No, no, no," he says. "No singing. Strictly piano."

I can still remember movie soundtracks that touched many people's hearts. While the visual film images have faded, the melodies still remain in my mind. Born in the 1970s, I probably have not seen more than half of the movies whose soundtracks are included on this CD. Nevertheless, the tunes all sound so familiar to me. All the notes seem to express the films' dialogues in a way that can't be put down in words. Eight selected works from seven movie soundtracks will put you in different moods; some are soft and tender, while others are light and lively. For example, "The Crave" from the movie "The Legend of 1900" delivers jazz in its fullest. "On a Theme of Paganini" from "Somewhere in Time" absolutely connects you to the concept of love beyond time and space. What's more, the album, recorded in a 24-track format, results from cooperation between the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and renowned pianist Rueibin Chen. Listen to this CD with your eyes closed and experience the feeling of having an orchestra play right in front of you.

Pianist Rueibin Chen received his first piano lessons from his father when he was five. He began his career as a concert pianist at age ten with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra. At the age of thirteen, he was chosen by the Taiwanese government from a national talent search and sent to Vienna, Austria, where he later obtained a Concert Diploma. He then went on to receive a Konzert Examen from Musik Hochschule (The highest honor of Diploma in performance) of Hannover in Germany. He continued further study under Lazar Berman and participated in Murray Perahia's masterclass.

Mr. Chen has been awarded top prizes and recognitions in the Rubinstein International Competition in Tel Aviv, Manresa, Stresa, Bellini, and Rome. He is also the prize winner in the Bachauer International Competition in Salt Lake City, as well as Rachmaninoff (Italy), Vienna (Austria), Callas (Greek), Chopin (Warsaw, Poland). Madame Rubinstein personally presented Mr. Chen his prize in Tel Aviv. Chen has had personal audiences with Presidents Wojciech Jaruzelski and Itzhak Rabin.

In 1994, he was named the Principal Soloist of the "Moldova" Iasi and Tirgu Mures Philharmonic Orchestra in Romania. He has appeared as soloist with many renowned orchestras such as the National Polish Radio Symphony, Utah Symphony, Budapest Symphony, Prague Symphony, Moscow State Symphony, Russian State Symphony, Ukrainian State Symphony, Romanian National Radio Symphony, Goettingen Symphony, Singapore Symphony, the New Philharmonia Japan, Shanghai Symphony, National Taiwan Symphony, Taipei Symphony, and London Chamber Players, amongst others. In 1998, he was invited to be the Soloist with the Taipei Symphony on their Asian Tour. He was also the designated Soloist of the 75th Anniversary of Turkey and in 2001 was honored at the official celebration of the 2nd Anniversary of Macao's Regression to China. Chen has also worked with many of today's leading conductors, among them; Sergiu Comissiona, J. Silverstein, A. Ligeti, A. Wit, G. Delogu, and P. Kogan.

Mr. Chen has produced CD recordings with labels such as Universal, Naxos International, KKM Austria, Zruden Music and Better Music. These recordings include works by Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky as well as his own transcriptions. Since 2002, Mr. Chen has been the Artist-in-Residence of Hong Kong Radio Television. His concerts are often broadcast in radio and television throughout Europe, Asia, America and Australia.

Mr. Chen is also an active chamber musician and has performed with well-known chamber groups such the Lark Quartet and Shanghai Quartet. Mr. Chen has also given master classes in acclaimed conservatories such as the New England Conservatory in Boston, and the Masterplayer International Music Academy in Lugano. Mr. Chen also serves as a jury member of international piano competitions.

Mr. Chen has been praised by various renowned musicians including Maestro Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and Alicia de Larrocha who described Chen's playing as "magnificent" and "full of promise." After Chen's masterful performance of Rachmaninoff's second Piano Sonata during a piano competition, he received masterful praise from the New York Times critic Harold C. Schonberg. Mr. Chen also received monumental praise from his completion of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos in two consecutive nights and left a lasting impression on the audience.
